Global Hunger and Development Appeal
Global Hunger and Development Appeal Mission StatementThe Global Hunger and Development Appeal (GHDA) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada is the primary means by which the ELCIC raises money in support of relief and development work around the world. The GHDA program has as its focus:
Of every dollar donated to GHDA, 77% is forwarded to support international relief and development work through Canadian Lutheran World Relief, 9% is allocated to synods to support domestic poverty alleviation programs on their territory, 5% is used to support the work of the Lutheran Office for Public Policy and the 12 inter-church social justice coalitions in which the ELCIC participates, 5% is forwared to support the work of the Lutheran World Federation, and 4% is used to provide effective administration of the GHDA program. Is GHDA a good way to address hunger? We think so! The administrative costs are about 4%, probably the lowest of any relief and development program. GHDA provides regular reports to the ELCIC and Synod conventions so you can ask questions directly and congregations participate in deciding the direction of the program. Through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), GHDA works with church partners which means that decisions are made by the people in those countries. GHDA addresses poverty in Canada. We know it is not a perfect program but among all the choices, we think it is a ministry that does help people and communities. And we believe that is what our stewardship is really all about!
