Outdoor Ministry
Philosophy and Objectives
Preamble
The Bylaws of Synod (Part VII, Section 9) provide a general outline of the responsibilities of the Outdoor Ministry Committee, each camp Management Board and Synod Council, in overseeing the synodical camps and encouraging its outdoor ministry program.
A healthy, growing outdoor ministry requires the committed interaction of these levels of church organization together with the congregations and agencies of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and beyond.
Philosophy
The outdoor ministry program of the Eastern Synod is an integral part of the church. It provides an opportunity for participants of all ages to experience the love of God and the good news of the Gospel. This ministry finds its context in experiences of intentional Christian community, living and learning in a variety of outdoor settings. These unique settings provide opportunity for participants to:
- experience the joy of recreation
- grow in skills and self-worth
- form relationships within a group
- develop a sense of wonder and love for God
- become partners in creation
- gain a fuller understanding of Biblical teaching
- worship God and share their faith
Objectives
Outdoor Ministry seeks to assist participants in growth, awareness and celebration of their Christian identity by providing programs which:
- help and challenge them to grow in their sense of personal identity, worth and responsibility within a Christian lifestyle;
- assist them in recognition and respect for the needs of others as persons of worth in the community;
- develop an awareness and celebration of God's creation;
- provide opportunities to experience spiritual renewal.
Guidelines for Implementation
Each synodical camp Management Board strives to implement the philosophy and objectives outlined above in its individual setting. However, the following general guidelines are held by all:
- Staff
Commitment to high standards in selection, training and evaluating of staff, including any resource persons.
- Leadership
Commitment to high standards in the quality of leadership training opportunities for both the camp programs and the wider church.
- Curriculum
Commitment to high standards in quality of all resource material used.
- Programs
Commitment to the development of specific programs that meet the ministry needs of the church.
- Spiritual Growth and Renewal
Commitment to intentional use and study of scripture as well as theological and faith reflection.
Rentals
The Outdoor Ministry Committee works in conjunction with synodical congregations, organizations and committees. Other potential users of camp facilities should be aware that camp Management Boards may choose not to rent to other organizations whose philosophy and objectives are perceived to be in conflict with those of the synod.
