Correctional Service Canada: Opportunity for CAPE Unit/Continuing Education Opportunity at Springhill Institution
This information may be benefical to those who are interested in the development of their prison ministry.
Please see the following letter sent by Rev Hugh Kirkegaard, Correctional Service Canada - Regional Chaplain - Atlantic
Dear Colleagues,
As many of you know it is difficult to find appropriate educational opportunities to prepare people for pastoral ministry in the prison setting. With the recent closing of the Restorative Justice program at Queen’s Theological College these opportunities have been further reduced.
After extensive discussions with the Charles J. Taylor Center for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care (at Acadia Divinity College/ADC) and Concilio Prison Ministry, an opportunity for a prison-based Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Unit will be offered this coming spring at Springhill Institution. It will be taught by The Rev. Dr. Chris Coffin who is a certified Teaching Supervisor with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) and adjunct lecturer in pastoral ministry at ADC. Information on CASC can be found on the web at: http://www.cappe.org/
The course is a 400 hr training program beginning April 30th through July13th. At the end of the Unit participants will receive an internationally recognized certificate for a Basic Unit of Clinical Pastoral Education. The course can also be taken for academic credit. Nine (9) credit hours can be earned from Acadia Divinity College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, if students register with them and pay the academic fees. This information is included in the application form which is attached. Please note: all students will be required to register through Acadia though students can choose to take the course for credit or not. All students will be eligible for a bursary.
The application deadline is March 5th, 2012, (extended from the February 4th date noted in the application form) though if people are seriously interested in applying we would encourage them to indicate that to Dr. Coffin as soon as possible as there are limited seats available. He can be contacted at: coffinfc [at] gmail [dot] com
Please pass this information along to any potential students across Canada who may be interested in either the experience and academic credit, or a unique opportunity for professional ministry development.
Thank you for your continuing partnership in prison ministry,
Faithfully,
Hugh
